We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the first Winter School of the Life Be-Wooden project, held from January 28 to January 30 at the University of Florence (UNIFI). This in-person event brought together participants from diverse backgrounds to explore the fascinating world of wood science and timber technology through an engaging combination of lectures, laboratories, and experiences.
Day 1: Hands-On Laboratories and Discussions
The Winter School kicked off with a series of interactive sessions, including the Wood Identification Laboratory and the Xylology Laboratory. Participants also engaged in a discussion on Wood and Water Interactions, setting the tone for an enriching learning experience that mixed theoretical knowledge with practical application.
Day 2: In-Depth Lectures and Industry Visits
The second day featured two detailed lectures on topics critical to timber analysis: Wood Characteristics Influencing Strength and Identification and Classification Systems for Structural Timber. In the afternoon, participants had the opportunity to visit two companies in the timber industry: TLF – Timber-Lab and ARL – Arredoline Costruzioni. These visits provided valuable information on sustainable construction practices and innovation in an increasingly promising sector that combines comfort, beauty, environmental sustainability and technology.
Day 3: Advanced Techniques and Training Program Closure
The final day focused on advanced methodologies, including Non-Destructive Investigation Techniques, Structural Uses of Wood-Based Products, Mechanical Testing on Timber, and Recognizing Wood Alterations. This intensive program equipped participants with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on expertise, empowering them for future endeavors in the field of timber research and construction.
